A surgeon has described the harrowing moment he amputated the leg of a five-year-old girl in Gaza without anaesthesia, as medical supplies ran out during the war.
Orthopedic surgeon Mark Perlmutter recounted the operation in a video newsfeed from Al Jazeera. He said the young girl remained conscious throughout the amputation because supplies of anaesthesia had been exhausted. To comfort her, doctors sang to her as they performed the procedure.
‘We were praying for her to faint,’ Perlmutter recalled.
The procedure took place during what Perlmutter described as Israel’s genocidal war.
The account underscores the severe shortage of medical supplies in Gaza during the conflict.
