Rudoni Makes Coventry History as Hornicek Mistake Pays the Penalty

Jack Rudoni ended Coventry City’s wait for a home Premier League goal, converting a sixth minute penalty to put the Sky Blues 1-0 ahead of Newcastle United at the CBS Arena. It was Coventry’s first home Premier League goal in over a quarter of a century.

Coventry returned to the Premier League for the first time since 2001, when the club played at Highfield Road. Before facing Newcastle, they claimed their first win of the season, a 1-0 victory at Nottingham Forest ahead of the international break.

They had yet to score in their opening two home games, but that changed in the sixth minute against the Magpies. The opportunity came after Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek failed to gather a loose ball in the penalty area while under pressure from Ephron Mason-Clark.

As Hornicek attempted to regather, Sidiki Cherif beat him to the ball and went tumbling under the challenge from the Czechia international. The referee showed little hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Rudoni made no mistake, sending Hornicek the wrong way to break the deadlock. The penalty gave Coventry a 1-0 lead.

Newcastle started the game 11th in the Premier League but had the chance to move fourth with a win. Harvey Barnes had their first chance, but he spurned the opportunity to equalise after good work down the left from Matias Fernandez-Pardo.

Rudoni’s penalty gave Coventry a 1-0 lead and ended a wait of more than a quarter of a century for a home Premier League goal.
