Joelinton returns to Newcastle squad as Coventry make two changes

Newcastle United have named Joelinton in a matchday squad for the first time this season, while Coventry City have made two changes for Monday’s Premier League meeting at Coventry Building Society Arena.

Team news

Coventry, second bottom in the table, go into the game after their first win of the top flight season, a victory away to Nottingham Forest last time out. Another win would lift them out of the relegation zone.

Newcastle lost their most recent away game 4-1 at Leeds United on September 14, then responded by beating Hull City 2-1 at home five days later. The Magpies sit 11th, five points above Coventry, and would move to ninth with a draw or to fourth with a victory.

Milan van Ewijk returns from a hamstring injury to start for Coventry alongside Sidiki Cherif. The pair replace Stephen Mfuni and Frank Onyeka, who drop to the bench. Defender Joel Latibeaudiere is also among the substitutes after being a doubt, but wideman Kaine Kesler-Hayden is out with a hamstring problem.

Coventry are without defenders Aurele Amenda (calf) and Luke Woolfenden (knee), midfielder Josh Eccles (knock) and forward Haji Wright (muscle).

Newcastle make one change from the side that beat Hull. Nico Gonzalez returns from a concussion to start in midfield in place of Sean Steur. Joelinton is included in a matchday squad for the first time this season after recovering from a thigh injury, and he is one of several injury returnees on the bench.

Captain Dan Burn (ankle) and William Osula (knock) are back among the substitutes along with right back Amar Dedic. Full back Tino Livramento and winger Anthony Elanga, who both have knocks, and midfielder Jacob Ramsey (thigh) are sidelined. Goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen is out with a hamstring injury.

Key stats

This is the first time the sides will meet in the league since 2009/10 in the Championship and the first time in the Premier League since 2000/01.

Coventry have lost seven of their last eight league games against Newcastle United (W1), including their last five in a row.

Coventry have lost both of their home Premier League games this season by an aggregate score of 6-0. They could become the sixth side in competition history to lose each of their opening three home matches of a campaign without scoring, after Everton in 2005/06, Crystal Palace in 2017/18, Burnley in 2020/21, Wolves in 2021/22 and Everton in 2023/24.

Only one side in English top flight history has ever lost each of their opening four matches of a season without scoring and then won their next two games. Derby County did so in 1899/00.

Only against Crystal Palace (5) has Coventry’s Frank Lampard won more Premier League games as a manager than he has against Newcastle (3). As a player, Lampard won 16 Premier League matches against the Magpies, winning more only against Sunderland (19) and Tottenham (18).

Before the start of this weekend’s matches, Newcastle (97) and Coventry (87) had faced more attempts than any other sides in the Premier League this season, with only Aston Villa (48) making fewer attempts than Matthias Jaissle’s side and the Sky Blues (51 each).

Newcastle have won their last two league visits to Coventry 2-0, in September 2000 and December 2009, but have never prevailed in three in a row before.

Since the start of May, only Arsenal (8) and Manchester City (7) have won more Premier League games than Newcastle (4). Newcastle could win successive games in the competition for the third time in 2026, having done so in January and March.

Jaissle’s eight points are the most by a manager in his first five Premier League games in charge of Newcastle since Alan Pardew in January 2011 (9).

A win here would give the German the most points in his first six in charge of the club in the competition (11) since Sam Allardyce in September 2007 (11).

Both sides have key returns and absentees to manage, with Coventry hoping to build on their first win and Newcastle aiming to keep climbing. The confirmed teams set up a meeting that carries important early season implications at both ends of the table.
