Disney opened its D23 fan event with a new look at VisionQuest, the series that completes the WandaVision story, before rolling out updates across the Marvel and Star Wars universes. The announcements included release dates, casting confirmations, and first footage descriptions for projects such as Ahsoka season two, Avengers: Doomsday, Star Wars: Starfighter, the X-Men reboot, and a LEGO animated Mandalorian special. Some spoilers follow, with a major warning before the Spider-Man: Brand New Day reveal.
Marvel’s streaming slate has produced mixed results, but WandaVision and Agatha All Along are two of its strongest entries. VisionQuest will close out that trilogy. Vision, played by Paul Bettany, died in Infinity War, but WandaVision brought back an all white version of the character and restored his memories in the finale. The new series picks up after that moment. Vision has escaped from people who tried to weaponize him and has been hiding. To find purpose, he talks with the AI personas inside his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and the infamous Ultron. His quiet life ends when a bounty is placed on him and he goes on the run with Thomas Shepard, a mysterious boy who may be Vision’s son reincarnated. While evading capture, Vision must confront what he is, resist Ultron’s influence, and figure out the mystery of his young companion.
Bettany returns as Vision, and James Spader is back as Ultron. Agatha All Along introduced a new Billy Maximoff, whose soul took over the body of a dying teenager as Wanda’s spell collapsed at the end of WandaVision. In that show Agatha helped Billy find the soul of his twin Tommy, also known as Speed, and place it into Thomas Shepherd, a teen boy who had drowned. That storyline continues in VisionQuest, with Ruaridh Mollica cast as Tommy and Thomas Shepherd. Bettany said last year that the series would examine intergenerational trauma connected to fathers and sons.
The cast also includes Todd Stashwick as Paradin, a bounty hunter tracking Vision, and T’Nia Miller as Jocasta, a vengeful robot. Emily Hampshire plays E.D.I.T.H., Tony Stark’s augmented reality security and defense system, while Orla Brady plays F.R.I.D.A.Y., the AI that replaced J.A.R.V.I.S. in Stark’s systems. James D’Arcy, who played the human Jarvis serving Stark’s father in Agent Carter, returns as J.A.R.V.I.S. Henry Lewis and Jonathan Sayer play D.U.M.E. and U, two of Stark’s robot workshop assistants. Lauren Morais appears as Lisa Molinari, Diane Morgan plays an associate of Paladin, and Cristian Lavin plays a mercenary. Mary McDonnell has a role that has not yet been disclosed. Faran Tahir returns as Raza, the leader of the Ten Rings who kidnapped Tony Stark in 2008’s Iron Man. Raza seemed to die in that movie, so his appearance may come in a flashback or inside Vision’s mind. VisionQuest debuts on October 14, 2026, on Disney+.
Ahsoka Tano began as Anakin Skywalker’s Jedi Padawan in the 2008 animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars and its follow-up animated series. She later appeared in Star Wars Rebels from 2014 to 2018 as a Rebel Alliance operative using the codename Fulcrum, and she made other cameo appearances throughout the Star Wars universe. Rosario Dawson brought the character into live action in The Mandalorian season two, and she also appeared briefly in The Book of Boba Fett.
Her own series Ahsoka is set in the same period as The Mandalorian. In season one Ahsoka worked with her former apprentice Sabine Wren, played by Natasha Liu Bordizzo, to stop Grand Admiral Thrawn, played by Lars Mikkelson, from returning from the galaxy where he had been stranded. If Thrawn returned, he could unite the remnants of the Galactic Empire and threaten the fledgling New Republic. The season ended with Ahsoka and Sabine stuck in that other galaxy while Thrawn came back and began moving against the New Republic.
The official season two synopsis reads: “Season 2 continues the story of Ahsoka Tano and her extraordinary journey beyond the known galaxy. As Ahsoka and her Jedi apprentice Sabine Wren travel across a mysterious and perilous world to find their way home, their friends Hera, Ezra, Zeb, and Chopper, must face the powerful Grand Admiral Thrawn and his sinister allies, who seek to plunge the New Republic into war.”
Dawson, Bordizzo, and Mikkelson return for season two. Hayden Christensen is back as Anakin Skywalker, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla, Eman Esfandi as Ezra Bridger, Ivanna Sakhno as Shin Hati, David Tennant as Huyang, Dave Filoni as Chopper, and Elden Bennett as Admiral Akbar. Rory McCann, known for Game of Thrones, replaces Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll after Stevenson died in 2023. Zeb Orrelios will also appear. Ahsoka season two premieres on January 20, 2027, on Disney+.
Marvel released the first full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday a few days before San Diego Comic-Con last month, then shared an exclusive special look with extra footage for attendees of the convention. That footage is now available for everyone else. The film is set fourteen months after the events of Thunderbolts*. According to the official logline: “Beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered.” Those universes are Earth-616, home of the Avengers, Wakandans, and New Avengers, Earth-828, home of the Fantastic Four, and the original X-Men universe.
In the new footage, Sue Reed, played by Vanessa Kirby, provides background on Robert Downey Jr.’s Victor von Doom. She describes him as an old friend and the smartest person in the room, then says “he used to be different” before “everything he loved was taken from him. I knew he was lost. But I did not realize he was broken.” Doctor Doom’s voiceover tells the ensemble cast that they are living “stolen lives” and insists that “now you must give them back.” Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026.
Star Wars: Starfighter still does not have an official teaser, and little concrete information has been released. Shawn Levy, the director of Deadpool and Wolverine, is directing the film, and Ryan Gosling stars. D23 attendees and some media outlets were shown exclusive first footage, introduced on stage by Levy and Gosling. Levy described the project as “full of humor, danger, and spectacle, but above all the joyous spirit that has always been the beating heart of this legacy that we all love so much.” The story is brand new and is not connected to the Skywalker Saga. Gosling said it follows a character “from the wrong side of the galaxy whose fate is intertwined with the fastest starfighter ever built.” The film is set five or six years after The Rise of Skywalker on a watery planet, a period that has not yet been shown in the franchise. That meant Levy and his team had to design new sets and looks that still felt like Star Wars. Star Wars: Starfighter opens in theaters on May 28, 2027, almost exactly fifty years after Star Wars: A New Hope premiered.
Major spoiler warning: The next section reveals a key detail from Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Mutants are finally coming to the MCU with X-Men, a planned reboot of the franchise directed by Jake Schreier, who directed Thunderbolts*. The film is slated for a 2028 release. Marvel has already begun setting the stage, starting with the reveal of Sadie Sink’s mysterious cloaked figure in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Sink plays a young Jean Grey, a character who is as much victim as villain. Joining Sink are Christopher Abbott from Wolf Man as Charles Xavier, also known as Professor X, Kit Connor from Heartstopper as Cyclops, Samara Weaving from Ready or Not as Emma Frost, Maya Boyd as Storm, Inde Navarrette from Obsession as Rogue, and Adam Driver from Rise of Skywalker as Nathan Milbury, also known as Mister Sinister. Reports had suggested Charles Melton was cast as Dr. Hank McCoy, also known as Beast, but he later dropped out of the project. More casting news is expected in the coming months. X-Men arrives in theaters on May 5, 2028.
LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian is an animated special described as a comedic retelling of all three seasons of the live action series The Mandalorian, with Gavin Hammon voicing The Mandalorian. The voice cast includes David Acord as Grogu and MA-13, Amy Sedaris as Peli Motto, Bill Burr as Migs, David Pasquesi as Majordomo, Katee Sackhoff as Bo-Katan Kryze, Emily Swallow as the Armorer, Giancarlo Esposito as Moff Gideon, Ming-Na Wen as Fennec Shand, Nick Nolte as Kuiil, Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano, Taika Waititi as IG-11 and IG-12, Temeura Morrison as Boba Fett, Timothy Olyphant as Cobb Vanth, Carl Lumbly as Greef Karga, Eric Bauza as Luke Skywalker and EV-9D9, Flula Borg as The Client, Marti Matulis as Vane, and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Carson Teva. The special arrives on Disney+ on September 2, 2026. Disney is also launching an official Mandalorian and Grogu podcast that day, which is when the film arrives on the streaming platform.
The D23 presentations mapped out a busy period for Disney’s two marquee franchises, with new Marvel and Star Wars titles set for Disney+ and theaters from late 2026 through 2028.
