Hundreds of fans stood along the streets of a seaside Welsh village on Saturday, Aug. 15, to say goodbye to Bonnie Tyler as her coffin was brought back to the place she called home.
Tyler, the Grammy nominated Welsh pop star celebrated for her 1983 hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” died last month in a hospital in Portugal at the age of 75. She had been admitted to a hospital in Faro, where she had a residence, in May for emergency intestinal surgery.
In Mumbles, a village near the city of Swansea, locals and visitors from across the U.K. and beyond gathered to watch the hearse pass by. The coffin was draped in the Welsh flag. Dozens waited outside the singer’s former home or placed flowers there.
“She was always coming home and making sure that she came back to her fans in Wales,” said Carys Edwards, 18. “Her songs really did touch a lot of people here in Wales; we loved her a lot.”
Born Gaynor Hopkins, Tyler was the daughter of a coal miner and grew up in public housing with an outside toilet in Skewen, a small town about 7 miles outside Swansea. She was raised alongside three sisters and two brothers.
Over the course of her career, Tyler earned three Grammy nominations and represented Britain at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, where she placed 19th. In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II appointed her a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her services to music, an honor largely credited to the enduring popularity of “Total Eclipse of the Heart.”
The power ballad reached No. 1 on the charts in both the U.K. and the U.S., and has amassed more than 1 billion streams. Its streaming numbers have received a boost from real solar eclipses in 2017, 2024, and most recently during this week’s eclipse.
Tyler also became known for other hits, including “It’s a Heartache” and “Holding Out for a Hero,” the latter featured on the soundtrack of the film “Footloose.”
A celebration of Tyler’s life for family and friends is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 17, at a church in Swansea. After the service, her final journey will take her through her hometown of Skewen.
Tyler’s songs continue to echo for fans around the world, a lasting reminder of the voice that carried so much emotion and found a permanent place in the hearts of many in Wales and beyond.
