Disney’s next trip to Arendelle is already heating up. At D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, the stars of the Frozen franchise stepped onstage to share the first hints of what fans can expect from the third film, including fresh songs and a long awaited wedding.
Frozen 3 is officially in the works, and the excitement is already piling up like fresh snow. The third installment of Disney’s blockbuster animated series was announced Friday at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, during D23, where Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel and Josh Gad reunited before a packed crowd to preview the movie’s upcoming music.
Bell and Menzel, who voice sisters Anna and Elsa, led the audience in a live performance of “Frozen Heart” from the original film. Gad, meanwhile, introduced an entirely new Olaf love song titled “Ooooh, Samantha,” bringing laughter and applause from fans.
The trio also offered a glimpse into the storyline for Frozen 3. Bell revealed that Anna will finally tie the knot with her “mountain man,” Kristoff, voiced by Jonathan Groff. Menzel teased that “love is in the air for everyone,” prompting Bell to playfully ask, “Everyone? Even Olaf?”
Gad explained that his snowman character’s romantic arc is “one snowflake in a blizzard of other snowflakes,” while Menzel hinted that the characters will travel “far from Arendelle” and encounter a threat “more wild and dangerous than anything else” they have faced so far.
Disney also confirmed that Oscar winning songwriting duo Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez will return to create new music for the sequel. Jennifer Lee and Trent Correy are set to direct, with the film scheduled to arrive in theaters on Nov. 24, 2027.
The first two Frozen films have proven to be box office juggernauts. The 2013 original earned $1.28 billion worldwide, and 2019’s Frozen II topped that with $1.45 billion, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Both soundtracks also dominated the Billboard 200, with the original reaching No. 1 in 2014 and staying there for 13 weeks. Frozen II’s soundtrack likewise hit No. 1 upon its release.
“Let It Go,” the franchise’s signature anthem performed by Menzel as Elsa, spent 33 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 5 for five weeks. The song also won the Oscar for best original song and the Grammy for best song written for visual media.
With beloved cast members returning, fresh songs on the way and a wedding in Anna’s future, Frozen 3 is shaping up to be another magical chapter for Disney fans when it reaches theaters in 2027.
