Amad Diallo has joined Lisandro Martinez in expressing frustration at Manchester United’s 2-0 Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night, calling the result a “F***ing disgrace” on Snapchat.
Diallo shared the message along with a picture of himself in action against Atletico. It was not clear who his outburst was aimed at, but it was another sign that things are not well at Old Trafford.
On Snapchat, Diallo wrote: “F***ing disgrace, I have no words.”
Given the timing, it would not be a surprise if Diallo was echoing Martinez’s criticism of the club’s board and director of football Jason Wilcox.
Martinez made headlines after criticising the club’s transfer policy following the Champions League setback at the Metropolitano. The Argentina defender spoke to Amazon Prime after the game.
“We did a fantastic season last season and now we expect more from the top, more players to compete because many teams bring many players as well,” Martinez said.
“Atletico have an amazing team and they deserved to win today.
“I expect more [investment]. 100%. I expect more from our technical director [Jason Wilcox].
“I have to be honest, as players we have to do more but it is also important when you make a strong squad to be ready for this kind of night.
“Tonight it is easy to [blame] the coach, easy to say the players but also we have to see other areas.”
United competed well against Atletico, but they fell behind inside the opening minute. Diogo Dalot was caught out of position, and Alex Baena crossed for Pablo Barrios to slot into the net.
Bryan Mbeumo wasted two excellent chances to equalise. United’s challenge effectively ended when Leny Yoro was dismissed for bringing down Jonathan David with the Canada striker through on goal. Ademola Lookman made it 2-0 shortly after.
Martinez’s comments divided opinion. Many United fans felt the central defender was right to speak out, but former United striker Wayne Rooney believed the outburst came at the wrong time.
“I actually disagree as I thought it was a good performance,” Rooney said.
“It’s a difficult one because I always used to feel like I was outspoken as a player, and you want to have your opinion, but I think he’s maybe gone too far; that should be down to the manager, and that should stay internal because the fans want to hear the players speak and they want to see them care.
“He clearly cares and wants the club to invest more money and more players, and if they do that, I think he’ll be one of the players out the door if I’m being honest with his performances.
“His performances haven’t been good enough but I think in some ways he is right, in terms of the club need to invest more at the top end of the pitch and in defence as well.
“I think it looks like that was a bit of an agenda from him because that doesn’t mirror the performance. I thought the performance was better.”
Diallo’s Snapchat post and Martinez’s comments have kept attention on United’s transfer plans as well as the defeat, with Rooney among those who believe the defender should have kept his views inside the club.
