Two herders have been shot dead and one other person injured in separate attacks in Plateau State, with the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) condemning the killings and calling for urgent security intervention.
Gunmen struck in two locations across Plateau State, leaving two herders dead and another person wounded. One attack took place around Kpanchuku in Jebbu Bassa Local Government Area, while another occurred in Gana Ropp Local Government Area, according to a statement from the state chapter of MACBAN.
Muhammad Salihu Isa, the association’s state secretary, identified the first victim as Sani Ibrahim, aged 18, who was ambushed while grazing his cattle. The second person killed was a 15 year old, later identified by her father as Asma’u Salihu. Her father also said his son was wounded in the same attack.
Isa said the gunmen shot their victims and fled. In a statement, he said the leadership of MACBAN in Plateau State “condemns in strong terms the brutal killing of our members.” He added that Sani Ibrahim was attacked and killed by suspected armed militia at Kpachuku in Jebbu Bassa Local Government Area on the afternoon of 14th August 2026 while grazing his cattle.
The secretary described the incidents as “barbaric, inhumane, unprovoked and unacceptable,” saying the group has lost many herders and cattle to gunmen and that members can no longer move freely to tend to their livestock.
Despite the ongoing attacks, Isa urged members and the public to remain calm and law abiding, advising them not to take the law into their own hands. He called on security agencies and relevant authorities to intensify efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure they face the full wrath of the law. “This dastardly act must not be allowed to continue,” he said, while commiserating with the families of the deceased.
Salihu Isa, the father of Asma’u, described the attack on their community as worrisome. He recounted that the family had just observed the last prayer of the day when gunmen suddenly opened fire, killing his daughter and injuring his son. The incident has been reported to security agencies.
Captain Polycarp Oteh, spokesperson for Operation Enduring Peace, had not responded to an inquiry from a Daily Trust correspondent at press time.
The association continues to call for calm and accountability following the latest bloodshed in Plateau State.
