Coventry City have reached an agreement with Nottingham Forest for striker Taiwo Awoniyi in a deal worth approximately £17m, with the move expected to be completed before Friday’s Premier League opener against Arsenal.
Awoniyi became Forest’s then record signing when he joined from Union Berlin in 2022 for £17.2m. The 29-year-old scored 23 goals in 103 appearances for the club, but found himself behind Chris Wood and Igor Jesus in the attacking pecking order and was left out of last season’s Europa League squad.
The Nigeria international started only three games last season, scoring four goals in 17 appearances in all competitions. In May 2025, he was placed in an induced coma after rupturing his intestine in a collision with a post during a match against Leicester.
Coventry are preparing to return to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years. They have already re-signed midfielder Gus Hamer from Sheffield United and goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, who had been on loan from Brighton. Winger Loum Tchaouna arrived from Burnley, defender Aurele Amenda from Eintracht Frankfurt, and Ghana international Caleb Yirenkyi signed from Nordsjaelland.
Striker Haji Wright is currently injured, leaving Brandon Thomas-Asante and Ellis Simms as manager Frank Lampard’s fit striking options ahead of the season opener.
Awoniyi’s move adds to a busy summer of recruitment at Coventry as the club gears up for its Premier League return.
