In a stunning display of power hitting, Paul Walter guided Manchester Super Giants to a 20-run victory over Sunrisers Leeds in the Eliminator, securing their spot in the men’s Hundred final. Walter’s impressive 80 off 46 balls laid the foundation for Super Giants’ commanding total of 186-4 at The Oval.
Walter remained composed after the early dismissal of opening partner Tim Seifert, combining with Jos Buttler to add 57 for the second wicket. He then formed a destructive partnership with Heinrich Klaasen, with the pair adding 114 off just 52 balls. Walter’s innings was marked by eight sixes, while Klaasen blasted four in his 63 off 26 balls.
Sunrisers struggled to mount a challenge, with their top order faltering under the pressure of a large run chase. The tournament’s leading run-scorer, Mitch Marsh, fell for 10, while captain Zak Crawley wasted a review when he was dismissed for six. Harry Brook showed glimpses of brilliance in his 31-ball knock of 49 but was given out lbw, although replays suggested the impact was outside the line of off stump.
England seamer Josh Tongue led the Super Giants’ bowling unit with an impressive 4-26, while Sonny Baker finished with 2-39. Sunrisers opener Ryan Rickelton was left stranded on 54 not out as his team finished 166-7. Super Giants will now face Trent Rockets in the final at Lord’s on Sunday.
Walter’s performance has been a highlight of the tournament, with the 32-year-old Essex all-rounder taking the headlines in a game featuring some of the biggest names in cricket. Picked up for just £31,000 in the auction, Walter has proven to be a shrewd investment, finishing with 225 runs in four games at an average of 76 and a strike rate of 181.45.
