Matt Groening hints at a return for Simpsons: Hit & Run

At D23, Matt Groening may have let slip that The Simpsons: Hit & Run is making a comeback. The creator’s offhand remark has fans buzzing about a possible remaster or re-release.

When asked at D23 about the potential for a sequel to the cult classic game, Groening replied, “I think the original game is coming back in some form,” before current showrunner Matt Selman added, “or not.” The tone in both voices and their body language suggest that Groening might have revealed something he wasn’t supposed to.

The original title shipped in 2003 for PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and Windows. While it’s possible to get the game running on modern computers, it’s not available on modern consoles. It’s currently absent from the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog and the Xbox backward compatibility list.

A return could take the form of a direct port, but a full HD remaster is a more intriguing possibility. There wouldn’t even be a need to rerecord the voice acting, since the original cast absolutely nailed it the first time around.

As the game famously said, “Alright, mindless drones, return to your ugly families.”

Whether it’s a simple port or a full remaster, fans of the beloved Simpsons game will be watching closely. Groening’s slip of the tongue suggests something is indeed in the works, even if Selman tried to play it cool.
