Cristian Romero has reflected on his five-year tenure with Tottenham Hotspur, acknowledging he ‘wasn’t perfect’ during his time with the club, as he embarks on a new chapter with Atletico Madrid.
The La Liga side has secured the services of the 28-year-old Argentina centre-back for a fee of £34.2m, with Romero committing to a five-year deal. His last appearance for Tottenham was against Sunderland in April, a game that ended in tears as he suffered a knee injury, ruling him out of the team’s final six Premier League games.
Romero’s decision to plan a trip to Argentina for his first club Belgrano’s Primera Division Apertura final sparked controversy among fans, but he ultimately returned to England to attend Spurs’ 1-0 win over Everton, a result that ensured the team’s safety from relegation. Romero took to social media to express his gratitude and remorse, stating, ‘I know I wasn’t perfect, But one thing gives me peace: I always gave everything. I defended this shirt with pride and with all my heart.’
Since joining Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021, Romero has established himself as a mainstay in the team’s defence, making 156 appearances. The highlight of his time with Spurs was the club’s Europa League triumph in 2025, where they defeated Manchester United in the final. Romero reminisced about his time at the club, saying, ‘When I arrived, I had a clear dream: to leave my name in this club’s history, I knew the only way was through hard work, sacrifice and achieving something that had seemed so difficult for so long: lifting a trophy again. And we did it.’
Romero’s farewell message to the club and its fans was filled with emotion, as he expressed his appreciation and declared his lasting connection to the team. ‘I’m leaving the club, but a part of my heart will always remain here. Once I was one of you. Today, I leave as one of you forever. With all my love and respect. Thank you for everything.’
As Romero begins his new journey with Atletico Madrid, his legacy at Tottenham Hotspur remains, with the club and its fans wishing him well in his future endeavors.
