As Europe struggles with its fifth heatwave of the summer, Greece is facing a unique challenge with gale force winds sweeping across the country, exacerbating the risk of wildfires.
Gusts of over 100km per hour have been recorded in Athens, the Aegean, and parts of mainland Greece, prompting the national observatory to issue a high alert for the Attica region surrounding the capital.
The Etesian winds, also known as the meltemia, are a summer phenomenon that can bring relief from the heat but also fuel forest fires. In anticipation of the winds peaking on Friday, Greece’s civil protection body has warned of an elevated threat of wildfires across at least five regions.

Meanwhile, the UK and other parts of western Europe are experiencing a heatwave, with temperatures reaching 27C in Edinburgh. In contrast, Greece is expected to see showers in some areas in the coming days, highlighting the diverse weather patterns across the continent.
As a precautionary measure, some of Athens’ famous hills have been closed to the public, and firefighting teams are on high alert to tackle any potential blazes.
