Government forces in Yemen have successfully repelled an attack by Houthi rebels in the southeastern part of Taiz province, according to military officials.

Yemeni government forces have thwarted a Houthi attack on positions along the al-Mafalis front, south of Haifan, marking the latest escalation in the conflict. The army’s 4th Infantry Hashd Brigade reportedly repelled the attack, inflicting heavy losses on the rebel group.

A military campaign is currently underway in Tor al-Bahah, aimed at defeating the Houthi militias. The government forces’ air defenses have also engaged Houthi reconnaissance drones in the skies over al-Makha, in the southwest of the country.

Escalation in the Conflict

The conflict has intensified in recent days, with the Yemeni government launching artillery shelling and drone attacks on Houthi positions and gatherings in several governorates. The government has stated that it will respond comprehensively to any actions undertaken by the Houthi militias, with the head of the Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad al-Alimi, emphasizing the need for a permanent and sustainable peace.

The relative de-escalation in the war between government forces and the Houthi group, which had been in place since April 2022, has given way to renewed clashes in early July, resulting in dozens of casualties. The government has made it clear that it is not in favor of a new truce that reproduces past experiences, instead seeking a lasting peace based on the existence of a state that monopolizes weapons and sovereignty.
