In a significant milestone, Shoprite’s on-demand digital platform, Sixty60, has achieved a remarkable $1.6 billion in sales for the year ended June 2026. This substantial growth underscores the retailer’s successful integration of its physical store network with its rapidly expanding digital commerce business.

The sales figure represents a 34.5% increase over the previous year, outpacing the growth of Shoprite’s core South African supermarket business, which saw a 7.1% rise in sales. This disparity in growth rates highlights the strategic importance of Sixty60 within Shoprite’s retail ecosystem, accounting for almost 9.4% of the group’s total reported sales.

Expansion and Growth

Shoprite’s Supermarkets South Africa business, contributing 84.5% of group sales, expanded its physical footprint by opening a net 262 stores during the year. This brings its corporate-owned and operated store base to 2,839, providing a significant advantage in the digital grocery market where delivery speed and proximity to customers are crucial.

The growth of Sixty60 is complemented by Shoprite’s efforts to maintain competitive prices. The company reported an internal selling price inflation of just 0.8% for the year, below the 3.9% inflation recorded for food and non-alcoholic beverages by Statistics South Africa. Like-for-like sales increased by 2.0%, reflecting the Group’s continued efforts to support customer affordability.

Future Outlook

Shoprite expects its headline earnings per share from continuing operations to rise between 9.7% and 14.7% for the year. The company will release its full 2026 results on September 1, 2026. As the retail landscape continues to evolve, Shoprite’s strategy of connecting its store network to digital demand positions Sixty60 for sustained growth, leveraging its vast physical network as infrastructure for its digital commerce business.

The remarkable growth of Sixty60 underscores Shoprite’s successful transition into the digital commerce space, leveraging its extensive store network to support online orders and drive sales.
