Former chairman of the Kano State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Abbas Ibrahim, has emerged as the Deputy Governorship candidate of the Labour party for the February 2027 election.
Ibrahim, who until Tuesday was an NUJ National Trustee Zone A, tendered his resignation from the post during the NUJ National Executive Meeting held in Dutse Jigawa state following his emergence as the running mate to the party’s governorship candidate, Hamisu Santuraki.
The former NUJ chairman clinched the running mate slot, which was conceded to the labour unions in the state.
“With a deep sense of humility, gratitude and comradeship, I wish to inform you that having emerged as the repositioned Labour Party Deputy Governorship Candidate for Kano State, I have decided to resign my position as NUJ National Trustee, Zone A, to enable me devote adequate time and energy to this new responsibility and actively participate in the political process,” Ibrahim wrote in his resignation letter.
He said the decision was not taken lightly in response to the call to participate more directly in politics and contribute his quota towards building a better society.
“Journalism, trade unionism and politics, though different platforms, are all avenues through which we can serve humanity, defend justice, promote the interests of the people and contribute to the development of our society,” he added.
Abbas Ibrahim retired from Radio Kano where he served as a crime reporter covering judiciary and crime beats.
He had a stint with New Express as its Lagos correspondent between 2000 and 2002.
